Assimilation in English



Title of the class: English phonetics  

Age of students: 16-18 (first year of studying)

General topic of the unit that is being studied:
assimilation

Topic of the class: progressive, regressive and reciprocal assimilation

Goals of the class:
Practical: distinguish between different kinds of assimilation.
Educative:  tolerance, ability to work in pairs.

Goals of the activity:
Training and practicing students' skills in speaking.

Description of the activity:

1.     Beginning of the class:
Warm-up activity: Teacher shows students the video with tongue twisters and they try to repeat first 5 of them.


Checking the home assignment:  We have finished a topic «transcription signs» and students were supposed to transcribe the text teacher gave them. Teacher receives papers with home tasks. Also they had to write 10 sentences using sounds ð and θ. Teacher proposes check them one by one.

2.     The main part.
1. Introduction of the new topic:
The teacher explains the difference between progressive, regressive and reciprocal assimilation providing examples.

2. Students listen to the recording (1 minute) and than write down the text. They make a transcription of this short text and mark in what words the assimilation is.

3. Now students make up dialogs in pairs and give dialogs to neighbors. They will find words with assimilation.

4. Closing and home-task.
The home task is to write down the dialog from the recording I’ll send students and make a transcription. Then students find out where the assimilation is. I’ll give them the list of the words. What kind of assimilation is used there?
